The Band Trailer gets a Face Lift

Thanks to the Trillium foundation, the band has had a trailer for the last year and a half. We use the trailer to haul our percussion to jobs and this past weekend to haul instruments to the St. Catharines Grape and Wine Parade.

: The Trailer Before Graphics (BG)

The trailer was given a face lift last week, as we had our friends at Sign Design install graphics on the sides and back of the trailer.

The back of the trailer lists our upcoming concerts and events, while the sides display our name, web address, location, and pictures of the band.

The Trailer After Graphics (AG)

The graphics and concert dates will help to promote the band every time we take the trailer to one of our jobs.

St. Catharines Parade 2009

The band participated in the St. Catharines Grade and Wine Festival Parade again this year. The senior and Junior band worked together to march and play in the annual event.

The Grape and Wine Festival Parade is one of the biggest parades in Canada and is televised nationally.

The instruments have a little rest before the hard work ahead..

It’s an early start on parade day, as our bus leaves Whitby at 7:00am. The weather forecast was not good for the parade, with rain being predicted from noon onwards.
Mother nature smiled on us though, and it actually turned out nice and other than a few sprinkles on the way to St. Catharines, we didn’t get any rain throughout the day.

The St. Catharines parade is a fun one to march in, because the parade route is packed with spectators from start to finish. With the crown urging us on, the 4km of marching doesn’t seem so long…

Solo Concert & Contest 2009

The band held its annual Audience Appreciation concert and solo contest on Thursday Feb. 26th.

As always, the soloists did a fine job, and the audience was fully entertained!

People attending this free concert were asked to donate non-perishable food for donation to the Salvation Army in Whitby. The audience was very generous and we received a full truck load of food. Thanks to everyone for helping those less fortunate!

The solo contest results:

Taking third place this year was Phil Crossley, playing “The Lazy Trumpeter” on Baritone.

Second place went to the ever lyrical Mhairi Holmer for her rendition of “Over the Rainbow”.

First place this year went to the big man himself, Gerry Murphy. He played his own arrangement of Czardas on Eb Bass (while hopping on one leg and humming! It was a challenging piece and Gerry played it with his usual good humour and entertaining style!

Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant

Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant

The Whitby Brass Band was a proud
recipient of a grant of $57,900 from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation in the spring of 2008.

With the grant funds the band has purchased new
percussion equipment, several new brass instruments, junior band
music folders, a larger PA system and a trailer to haul our
percussion to concerts. In addition to improving the senior band
performances, the new equipment will allow us to expand our
junior band program, freeing up instruments to be used by
learners and junior band players.

Many Thanks to the Ontario Trillium foundation and the Province
of Ontario for their support of community groups in Ontario!
