Band Info

The Whitby Brass Band traces its heritage back as far as 1857. The group in its present form started after World War II when several dedicated musicians in the Whitby area “re-commissioned” the band instruments that had long ago been put into storage.

Over the years several names have applied to this band: Whitby Citizens Band,Whitby Police Band, and finally, The Whitby Brass Band. A series of dedicated bandmasters have conducted and instructed the band over the years: Eric Clarke, Stan Redfearn, Barry Hodgins, and our current conductor, Roland Hill.

All the band members are amateurs in the true sense of the word in that they play for the love of music itself. They all hold regular jobs outside the performance of music, including teachers, tradesmen, police officers, engineers, factory workers, business persons, students, retirees, and many others. Their ages range from early teens to late sixties.

Our repertoire features all types and styles of music from classical, through to pop and rock. The variety of music that we perform helps to make sure that our audience, no matter what their age or musical interest, is entertained.

While we are a community amateur group, this does not mean that the quality of our performance is amateur. As one of the finest bands in Ontario, the Whitby Brass Band prides itself on performance excellence. From virtuoso solos, to driving rock numbers, the band puts its utmost into each musical number.
